Rooibos (or red bush) tea is a popular South African herbal tea considered to be a health drink in its native country. It is noted for its appetite and digestive enhancing qualities, and its ability to soothe nervous tension. Besides these qualities however, the unique ingredients of this delicious refreshing tea also provide vital antioxidants that protect the immune system and reduce inflammation.
Antioxidants are essential nutrients necessary to prevent the deterioration of the body’s cells. As a result of poor nutrition and ageing, antioxidant levels decline and we become more likely to develop conditions such as arthritis, heart disease and other major health problems due to a weakened immune response.
Studies on Rooibos tea indicate that it contains the specialist antioxidants quercetin, rutin, and aspalathin which are considered to be highly protective for the arteries, the digestive system, and the immune system. Quercetin is also known for its anti-inflammatory effect on joints and the respiratory system. The protective antioxidant qualities of this unique tea are considered to make it a valuable addition to the daily diet.
