Are you drinking enough water each day? If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

  • Water is constantly lost from the body on a daily basis - through urine (average 1 and ½ litres a day), bowel movements, breathing, sweating and normal body metabolism (450mls ). It is essential to replace the lost fluid on a daily basis.
  • 20% of water intake is from food (mainly from vegetables and fruit) and the rest must come from fluids that we drink.
  • Drink 1250 mls of water per 30kg of body weight. An adult weighing 75 kgs would need to drink 3125 mls of water a day.
  • Coffee, tea, soft drinks or alcohol are not good substitutes for water and actually have a diuretic effect on the body
  • During exercise, drink extra water to make up for that lost through sweat.
  • A hunger that won’t be satisfied is more likely to be a thirst
