The link between joint pain and inflammation

Joint pain is often due to cartilage (and other tissue around the joint) becoming inflamed. It makes sense, therefore, that anything that can help reduce inflammation has the potential to help people with joint pain. Plus, it may help to protect against several other long-term health issues that are thought to have their roots in inflammation.

Why Spirulina may help with inflammation

Researchers have recently found a compound in Spirulina (a blue-green algae) called C-phycocyanin that may have anti-inflammatory properties. This compound is one of the bluish-green pigments that gives Spirulina its colour. C-phycocyanin is known to have a antioxidant properties, which means it can help to protect our cells against free radical damage. But now research is also indicating that it may be able to help relieve inflammation as well.

Other benefits of Spirulina

If further research supports these findings, naturopaths will be able to add another health benefits to the long list already associated with Spirulina. These include:

  • Boosting immunity and energy levels
  • Supporting eye, brain and cardiovascular health
  • Helping to maintain healthy blood sugar balance
  • Providing a good vegetarian source of Iron and protein
