Take control of heartburn and indigestion. If you suffer from heartburn and indigestion symptoms, eating and pain often go hand in hand. Ease that burning feeling with the power of a little nutritional know-how.

You can approach self-care for indigestion and heartburn symptoms in a number of ways. If you’re not sure just where to start, try these simple steps first:

  • Get a check-up: see your healthcare practitioner to make sure your indigestion symptoms aren’t related to a medical problem.
  • Slow down at the table: take time to eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly.
  • Check for food sensitivities: work with a knowledgeable health professional to see if certain foods make your indigestion and heartburn symptoms worse.
  • Are you upset? Stress can trigger indigestion and heartburn. Learn to relax and don’t take stress with you to the meal table.
  • How are your friendly bacteria levels? Keep your digestive system healthy by increasing the good bacteria in your gut with regular top-ups of yoghurt and miso soup. Reduce your intake of high fat and sugary foods to help prevent the wrong kind of bacteria from building up.
  • Low stomach acidity: low acidity can cause indigestion. Try a dessertspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in warm water at mealtimes. This can help to balance stomach acidity and reduce heartburn symptoms.
  • Watch your drinks: reduce or avoid drinks that contain caffeine or ice, and fizzy drinks, alcohol, and cigarettes, particularly around mealtimes. These drinks can increase acidity, which can cause painful heartburn symptoms.
  • Try a herbal tea: gentle, warming herbal teas with your meals can help with digestion. Chamomile, Ginger, Peppermint, and Rooibus teas all have good reputations for easing indigestion.
  • Look after your liver: constipation can cause upper digestive discomfort. Liver-stimulating herbs such as Dandelion and Milk Thistle, Aloe Vera juice, ground linseed, and teas that assist regularity are all helpful in moving things right along.
