Milk Thistle: natural Psoriasis help

Naturopath Vicki Martin explains how Milk Thistle can help with the skin condition Psoriasis

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common skin condition where skin cells reproduce too quickly. The result is usually red, dry, flaky and/or scaly patches of skin. It is not contagious, but can still cause a lot of embarrassment and stress if you’re one of the many people affected.

What causes psoriasis?

Modern medicine still isn’t 100% sure exactly what causes psoriasis. There may be several factors at work – both genetic and environmental. The US National Psoriasis Foundation says that it may be at least partly due to autoimmune response. Many naturopaths believe that psoriasis can result from weak liver function. The liver is responsible for clearing toxins from the blood. If someone’s liver is overworked and not doing its job, toxic build-up can lead to skin conditions like psoriasis. Because there is no agreement on the cause, conventional medicine can only treat the symptoms when they occur.

How can Milk Thistle help with psoriasis?

Milk Thistle may help with psoriasis in two different ways. Firstly, it’s one of the most powerful known liver-supporting herbs. It can help to strengthen liver function and assist with regenerating and repairing damaged liver cells. Secondly, according to the US National Psoriasis Foundation, it can “inhibit human T-cell activation, an autoimmune response that occurs in psoriasis”. So, if you’re looking for some gentle, herbal help with psoriasis that does more than treat the symptoms, Milk Thistle may be your answer.
