Emma Baldwin- Nutritionist
Nutrition is highly important during pregnancy as it has major effects on all aspects of reproduction. During pregnancy, the fetus undergoes a rapid period of growth and development and it is important that mothers-to-be are aware of certain nutrients which could have negative effects on their unborn baby.
Caffeine, found in coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks, crosses the placenta (and breastmilk) and is not easily metabolised by the fetus. Therefore it is recommended that women limit their intake of caffeinated beverages. Likewise, some herbs present in caffeine free herbal teas can cross the placenta (and breastmilk) and are not appropriate for a developing fetus or infant.
